In 1899, food chemist David Wesson developed a new process for deodorizing cottonseed oil through a high-temperature vacuum process. This new product originally was marketed as
Snowdrift by the Southern Oil Co., but later was named for its developer. In the 1920s, the vegetable oil division was spun off as the Wesson Oil & Snowdrift Company.
